<p>Material properties of rock samples determined in the laboratory form the basis for further planning and analysis of rock mechanics and engineering-related problems. In addition to the testing of the specimens themselves, specimen preparation, specimen documentation, and specimen post-processing also play a&#xa0;key role in achieving qualitatively meaningful results.</p><p>The aim of the presented study is to demonstrate which specimen parameters significantly influence test results and how the specimen documentation process can be made more precise, objectified, and digitized through the use of a&#xa0;3D profilometer.</p><p>This contribution also explains the future opportunities the use of a&#xa0;3D profilometer will open up for the scientific staff of the Chair of Mining Engineering and Mineral Economics in the field of basic research.</p>

Material properties of rock samples determined in the laboratory form the basis for further planning and analysis of rock mechanics and engineering-related problems. In addition to the testing of the specimens themselves, specimen preparation, specimen documentation, and specimen post-processing also play a key role in achieving qualitatively meaningful results.

The aim of the presented study is to demonstrate which specimen parameters significantly influence test results and how the specimen documentation process can be made more precise, objectified, and digitized through the use of a 3D profilometer.

This contribution also explains the future opportunities the use of a 3D profilometer will open up for the scientific staff of the Chair of Mining Engineering and Mineral Economics in the field of basic research.
