With the greentec steel focus of voestalpine, a CO2-reduced steel production (target: 30% reduction by 2029) is being implemented. This involves the partial to complete phase-out of carbon-based pig iron production via the blast furnace route and the introduction of electric steel production. voestalpine is already preparing electric arc furnace systems which, for an economical operation, can only process input materials with a metallic iron content of over 90% and significantly reduced slag volume. The reduction of iron oxides is not possible in this melting unit. The preparation and processing of previous input materials must therefore be adapted to the requirements of the new technology.
This article discusses the fundamentals on which the integration of ore from the Styrian Erzberg into the new steel production could succeed. The CO2 from the carbonatic ore can be used in an autogenous operation as process gas for calcination. A direct reduction of the ore using hydrogen at temperatures above 800 °C leads to a metallic iron fraction that is considerably stable in air as well as in water and can be enriched through wet magnetic separation. The article presents and discusses experimental results from research conducted between 2017 and 2023, which also form the basis for ongoing intensive research into technical feasibility.
