This intends to give a&#xa0;further meaningful contribution to the Roadmap 2050 for CO<sub>2</sub>-neutral cement production of the Association of the Austrian Cement Industry [<CitationRef CitationID="CR1">1</CitationRef>].</p><p>The objective of the research project conducted jointly by the Austrian Cement Association and the Chair of Mineral Processing is to research and develop a&#xa0;clinker produced with alternative raw materials with a&#xa0;significantly lower CO<sub>2</sub> footprint than conventional Portland cement clinker. This aims to reach a&#xa0;substantial contribution to climate protection and to secure cement industry locations in Austria. The project does not focus only on identifying new alternative raw materials and evaluating their potential for usage, but also on the systematical increase of their proportions in clinker formulations through laboratory-scale experiments. Those compositions are optimized, and the quality of the resulting clinkers are completely evaluated. Pilot-scale and industrial-scale trials complement the experimental program, offering valuable insights about process stability, plant equipment availability, emissions, and economic viability. As approximately 60–65% of CO<sub>2</sub> emissions in cement production are caused by raw materials, this project focusses on the achievement of CO<sub>2</sub>-neutral cements. Furthermore, the regional availability of alternative raw materials, their potential impact on product quality, and the achievable CO<sub>2</sub> reduction potential is analyzed. The fundamental idea of this project is an increase in the substitution rate of raw materials, while keeping the same quality compared to conventional Portland cement clinker [<CitationRef AdditionalCitationIDS="CR3" CitationID="CR2">2</CitationRef>–<CitationRef CitationID="CR4">4</CitationRef>].</p>
