Erfassung und Visualisierung unterirdischer Bewegungsräume zur Vervollständigung des Lagebilds in Urban Operations

The research project EVUB defined the relevant geo-factors, infrastructure, and movement areas which can serve as the basis for a 3D representation for the Austrian Armed Forces.
An area around Vienna’s Karlsplatz was defined as a test area for a prototype in order to determine which data can be researched for the test area from public sources and the quality and quantity of this data. Furthermore, it was determined which non-publicly accessible data (closed data) was available and under which circumstances this data could be used in the project.
Various survey methods and technologies were tested in the test area: from modeling building plans in CAD to capturing structures using LiDAR scanners and mixed reality glasses, to measuring structures with a laser range finder, and linking them with real data for inaccessible areas.
Collected data was processed as 3D models and successfully integrated into the command information system of the NIKE research and development program of the Theresian Military Academy, where this information can be used by emergency services with the help of augmented reality.
A key objective of the project was to understand the extent and complexity of the topic and to be able to estimate the effort required to roll out the system in a larger urban area and to create more complex visualizations.
Preliminary work was carried out to extend the project to the creation of an Austria-wide underground atlas, which—with the appropriate financial and content-related support from the authorities—can be implemented in the next phase.
