Der European Mining Course – Bergbaulehre international gedacht
摘要
The European Mining Course (EMC) is an international triple M.Sc. program that educates experts for mining and related industries. The EMC is organized by three internationally renowned universities, Aalto University from Finland, RWTH Aachen University from Germany and, since 2023, Montanuniversität Leoben (Austria). As part of the EMC, students spend one semester at each of the three partner universities before writing their Master’s thesis in the fourth semester, usually in cooperation with industry. After successfully completing the EMC, students receive a total of three M.Sc. degrees, one from each partner university.
Since its foundation in 1996, the EMC has been characterized by close cooperation with the European mining industry, thus ensuring the relevance of the course. Industry lectures, excursions and internships, as well as opportunities for final theses, offer practical insights for students. The support of industry partners is centrally organized by the Federation of European Mineral Programs (FEMP), a non-profit foundation that collects and manages donations from industry. The contributions from industry are used to fund, for example, scholarships and extra-curricular activities. In return, the companies have access to the alumni network with more than 800 alumni and the opportunity to present themselves as an attractive employer to students.
As a two-year international Master’s program with the opportunity to study in three different European countries, the EMC is extremely attractive to students and has seen record numbers of applicants in both 2023 and 2024. The EMC’s international, integrated curriculum builds on the complementary expertise of its partner universities. The EMC includes subjects on rock mechanics, geology, processing technology, mining science, mechanical engineering, business administration, project management, and various mining-specific subjects on weather technology, mine planning, and environmental aspects.
The EMC’s success story to date has only been possible with the support of industry. In order to continue to train highly qualified mining engineers, we are dependent on new collaborations.
