High-quality data is of great importance for the development of calculation models. Modern systems are equipped with a large number of sensors that enable continuous monitoring. Storage in databases offers a great potential for process analysis and optimization. In 2021, a research project was initiated at the Chair of Mineral Processing in collaboration with CEMTEC—Cement and Mining Technology GmbH and the Linz Center of Mechatronics GmbH. It’s aim is to develop a grinding model for a stirred media mill that reflects the physical process as closely as possible in order to obtain a better understanding of the grinding process, the relevant parameters of influence, and finally a tool to predict the grinding result. The model should assist mill upscaling and plant design with an optimum energy efficiency. For this purpose, specific grinding tests are carried out with the container-based stirred media mill of the Chair of Mineral Processing. In addition to a description of the system, initial evaluations of the grinding data are shown and the optimization work required to obtain reliable data is discussed. The Population Balance Model was primarily chosen for modeling, the principles of which are explained.
