The cement industry is facing the challenge of reducing its CO2 footprint. One way to achieve this is through increased use of low-CO2 alternative raw materials in clinker production. This article describes the development of an innovative process control system for optimizing raw meal production at the Wietersdorf cement plant. By employing inline analysis technologies and an optimization algorithm, various qualities of alternative raw materials can be simultaneously utilized to sustainably minimize CO2 emissions. The tool is currently in the testing phase and has the potential to enhance product consistency while increasing the alternative raw material rate and as a result reducing the CO2 footprint.
