Effective decision making with hesitant bipolar neutrosophic DEMATEL approach for comprehensive coastal Erosion evaluation

The decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) method is a well-established approach in multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) that identifies the interrelationships between problem factors. However, traditional DEMATEL methods have limitations when it comes to handle uncertain and hesitant information, which is prevalent in real-world decision-making scenarios. To address this challenge, we propose a novel coastal erosion assessment approach based on the hesitant bipolar neutrosophic DEMATEL (HBN-DEMATEL) method. Coastal erosion is a complex phenomenon influenced by natural and human-caused factors, such as tourism, coastal development, sand mining, and mangrove cutting, which can exacerbate the issue. Evaluating these factors is essential for developing effective mitigation plans and coastal management policies. However, ranking these factors is challenging due to their interconnections and conflicts. To optimize the evaluation process and enrich problem analysis, we introduce a novel set of linguistic variable definitions customized for hesitant bipolar neutrosophic elements. Moreover, to validate the effectiveness of the proposed HBN-DEMATEL approach, we conduct a case study focusing on coastal erosion. In this study, a team of specialized field experts evaluate twelve most important factors using hesitant bipolar neutrosophic linguistic data across three dimensions. The HBN-DEMATEL method is then employed to analyze the data and prioritize the factors accordingly. The results highlight that “beach profile and stability” (C6) and “sea level rise” (C7) are the most influential factors in coastal erosion. The cause-effect diagram provided by the proposed approach can assist the experts and policymakers in devising effective strategies to mitigate coastal erosion.
