摘要

Problem definition

Ethics consultation education should enable future ethics consultants to perform their tasks with the required quality. The task of macrodidactics is to clarify the underlying didactic assumptions.

Arguments

This theoretical contribution proposes a macrodidactic foundation for educational programs in ethics consultation, which serves as a starting point for curriculum development. It addresses five dimensions. The first dimension results from the objectives of ethics consultation and the resulting professional requirements for ethics consultants. These require a curriculum that is based on the principles of evidence-based teaching that organizes teaching in a constructivist, learner-centered and competence-oriented way. Other dimensions result from the needs of the stakeholders, i.e., societal, institutional, and clinical actors who specifically request ethics consultation. In the form of ‘wicked problems’, questions of social and planetary justice as well as other health determinants emerge that require professionals in the various fields of ethics consultation to combine the roles of scientist, advocate, or activist. As macrodidactic building blocks of the curriculum, these dimensions extend the field of competence of ethics consultants for individual case counsultation and beyond. In doing so, they also address criticisms regarding existing conceptions of ethics consultation and the role of consultants. In addition, they are highly compatible with the so-called Quintuple Aim-approach which defines patient experience, cost reduction, population health, psychosocial health, and social justice as characteristics of a quality-oriented healthcare system.

Conclusion

The proposed macrodidactic framework has the potential for promoting the professionalization of ethics consultation at the curricular level and for strengthening its position within healthcare systems that are subject to significant transformations and associated ethical complexities.
