Characterization, sources and risk assessment of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in agricultural soils from Jilin Province in Northeast China

The study was to clarify the contamination status of Organochlorine Pesticides (OCPs), Organophosphorus Pesticides (OPPs), and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in agricultural soils in Jilin Province, Northeast China. The results showed that OCPs ranged from 12.94 to 170.59 μg kg−1, with higher concentrations in the east and lower concentrations in the west. OPPs ranged from 169.44 to 657.73 μg kg−1, predominantly concentrated in the central and southern regions of Jilin province. PAHs ranged from 447.83 to 2789.85 μg kg−1, with higher concentrations observed in the central area. The OCPs in agricultural soils were predominantly from previous usage of pesticides, while OPPs mainly originated from current agricultural activities. In contrast, PAHs had a broader range of sources, including transportation pollution, fossil fuel combustion, and biomass combustion. The study found precipitation significantly correlated with OCP (r = 0.37, p < 0.05), OPP (r = 0.32, p < 0.05), and LMW-PAH (r = 0.44, p < 0.01) concentrations in agricultural soils, indicating that geo-environmental factors determined the generally spatial distribution of organic pollutants at the regional scale. In addition, soil physicochemical properties, such as soil organic matter and soil particle size distribution, also influenced the accumulation of pollutants in soils, resulting in different distributions of individual pollutants. The individual and integrated carcinogenic risk of OCPs, OPPs, and PAHs all were below 10–4, respectively, higher health risk coefficients of children than adults indicate organic pollutants in the study area pose a certain potential risk to children. It is noteworthy that there is a strong relationship between the spatial distribution of organic pollutant levels and high carcinogenic risk values.
