This leads to “overage”—supplies that are prepared but unused—with financial and environmental impacts. Standardization of lists is a strategy to reduce resource consumption and waste. This study collates the published impacts of pick list standardization initiatives on costs, outcomes, and provider satisfaction.</p> Methods <p>A comprehensive literature search was performed in Medline, Embase, and Web of Science.</p> Results <p>The search identified 11 papers for inclusion. Most included surgeon education and a consensus-based process for optimization. Substantial cost savings were consistently reported, with no difference in adverse events. Changes in operative time were modest and variable. Only one study reported environmental impacts, with substantial potential savings. Initiatives were generally well received.</p> Conclusions <p>Available evidence suggests that pick list standardization is safe, cost-effective, and acceptable to perioperative personnel, with potential environmental benefits that remain insufficiently explored.</p>
