Über Dankbarkeit – Annäherung an eine flüchtige Empfindung
摘要
Melanie Klein first presented her reflections on Envy and Gratitude at the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA) Congress in Geneva 70 years ago in July 1955, later attributing central importance to gratitude. Nevertheless the topic of “gratitude” remains marginal in the psychoanalytic literature. The author examines why gratitude is such a fleeting, hard to sustain emotion. It is shown that gratitude is associated not only with joy but also with dependency, guilt and narcissistic vulnerability. Based on clinical vignettes, linguistic and cultural historical considerations as well as metapsychological reflections, it explores how gratitude is experienced, defended against or displaced. The ability to feel gratitude is described as an expression of emotional maturity.
