The making of Sigmund Freud’s article “The dissolution of the Oedipus complex” is described against the background of his cancer and Otto Rank’s book The trauma of birth published shortly before. The conflicts that in 1924 led to the break between Freud and Rank are examined on the basis of a modified concept of the Laius complex and conceptualized as an “encounter at the crossroads”.
