<p>Hippoboscidae is a specialized group of blood-sucking flies that are vectors of many dangerous diseases both in mammals and birds. Hippoboscid flies are vessel feeders. Their feeding apparatus consists of a proboscis enclosed in two maxillary palps. Numerous sensilla form a crown on the tip of the proboscis near the biting apparatus. The proboscis sensilla of representatives of separate lines of evolution – Ornithoicinae, Ornitomyini, Olfersiini, Hippoboscinae and Lipopteninae – were examined. All sensillum crowns are organized in a similar way: short and long basiconic sensilla are located along the edges, with several small styloconic sensilla and 2 large ones between them. In some cases, 1–2 basiconic sensilla are located among the styloconic. The total number of sensilla in the crown of Ornithoicinae is 22, in Ornitomyini – 20, Olfersiini – 20, Hippoboscinae and Lipopteninae – 18. The number of sensilla correlates with the age of the genus. Feeding apparatus of the Ornithoicinae flies is characterized by a greater number of basiconic sensilla compared to styloconic ones. Representatives of Ornitomyini and Olfersiini have an equal number of sensilla of these two types compared to Ornithoicinae. In the representatives of Hippoboscinae and Lipopteninae the number of basiconic sensilla is less than the number of styloconic ones. The decrease in the number of sensilla occurs due to the long basiconic ones. Some basiconic sensilla of mammalian parasites and Olfersiini representatives are usually longer than those of bird parasites.</p>
