<p>Sarcophagid flies are used extensively in forensic, medical, and veterinary disciplines, particularly to determine postmortem intervals (PMI) in forensic investigations. The current study seeks to investigate the life cycle and morphological characteristics of two Sarcophagidae species i.e. <i>Sarcophaga (Liosarcophaga) aegyptica</i> Salem, 1935 and <i>Sarcophaga (Liosarcophaga) portschinskyi</i> (Rohdendorf, 1937), from Northwest India. Gravid females were collected from decomposed chicken meat and reared under the laboratory conditions. Adults were morphologically identified with the aid of male terminalia, whilst larvae were morphologically evaluated using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). SEM analysis provided high-resolution images that revealed subtle morphological differences and facilitated more precise identification of species. Some of the characteristics used to distinguish these two species include the presence of spines on the surface, the number of lobes of anterior spiracles, variations in the details of the cephalopharyngeal skeleton and posterior spiracles. The findings of this research support the use of both adult and larval morphology for species identification. This work facilitates the precise species identification during all developmental stages of Sarcophagidae to enhance accurate PMI estimation.</p>
