Extraversion and the resting brain: a coordinate-based meta-analysis of resting-state functional brain imaging studies

The personality trait of extraversion, which is characterized by an outward focus, has been the subject of considerable research because of its implications for personal development and well-being. Although the relationship between extraversion and brain function has been studied extensively, the findings from different studies are often contradictory and highly heterogeneous. To address these inconsistencies, our study used a meta-analysis technique that included 19 resting-state functional neuroimaging studies (1440 healthy subjects, 116 peak coordinates). Our results revealed consistent positive correlations between extraversion and intrinsic activity within specific brain regions, including the left paracentral lobule extending into the inferior parietal lobule, the right lingual gyrus, and the right supplementary motor area. Conversely, we observed a negative correlation between extraversion and activity in the right superior and middle frontal gyrus. In addition, our analysis demonstrated that the link between extraversion and activation in the right inferior frontal gyrus is influenced by gender. This comprehensive exploration of brain activity patterns associated with extraversion provides novel insights and may inform personalized interventions focusing on specific brain regions relevant to extraversion-related difficulties.
