<p>From 1994 to 2023 Russian and American scientists were involved in collaborative research programs performed under the aegis of the U.S.-Russian Joint Coordinating Committee on Radiation Effects Research (JCCRER). JCCRER Project 1.1 was a comprehensive program to improve the dosimetry system for the Southern Urals population exposed to radiation. During the implementation of Project 1.1, advanced approaches and methods of retrospective dosimetry were developed and used for the first time. The purpose of the paper is to describe the scientific contribution of the project results to radiation dosimetry, the main lessons learnt, and the achievements made.</p>
