Evaluation of educational quality of endoscopic myringoplasty/tympanoplasty videos on Youtube using LAP-VEGaS and IVORY scales

In this study, we evaluated the general characteristics, popularity, educational quality (EQ) and feasibility of endoscopic myringoplasty/tympanoplasty videos on YouTube by LAParoscopic surgery Video Educational GuidelineS (LAP-VEGaS) scoring system and Instructional Videos in Otorhinolaryngology by YO-IFOS (IVORY) grading system (IVORY GS) and correlated our findings with the literature.
MethodsVideos with the keywords “endoscopic myringoplasty, tympanoplasty” were searched on YouTube and the videos that met the criteria were analyzed according to age (in months), count of likes and dislikes, country of origin, duration (in minutes), resolution, total view count, video like rate (ratio)(LR), view rate(ratio)(VR), video power index (VPI), viewer interaction index (VII), LAP-VEGaS score, IVORY 1, IVORY 2 and IVORY GS (total IVORY) scores.
ResultsA total of 52 YouTube videos were evaluated. The mean LAP-VEGaS score was 9,35 ± 3, IVORY 1 score was 17,25 ± 4,79, IVORY 2 score was 8,9 ± 1,81 and total IVORY score (IVORY GS) was 26,15 ± 5,77. Most of the videos were of medium quality. LAP-VEGaS scores of the videos were highly correlated with IVORY scores, LAP-VEGaS, IVORY 1 and IVORY GS scores were all correlated with video power index (VPI) and video interaction index (VII). In the regression analysis, there was no statistically significant effect of independent variables on LAP-VEGaS and IVORY GS scores.
ConclusionThe LAP-VEGaS and IVORY GS scoring systems are complementary and reliable for assessing the educational quality of surgical videos on YouTube. However, most available endoscopic myringoplasty/tympanoplasty videos are of only medium quality. Wider adoption of these scoring systems may help standardize and improve the quality of surgical educational content on online platforms.
