A survey on surveys: a cross-sectional analysis of factors influencing responsiveness of dermatologists to survey studies

Survey-based research is a commonly utilized approach to gather data on a wide array of topics, from gauging patient satisfaction to identifying gaps in education, diagnosis, and care. Despite this, survey responsiveness among physicians is notably low. Objective: This study sought to identify factors that increase survey responsiveness among dermatologists. A 45-question, IRB-approved survey was disseminated to the ODAC conference listserv. Descriptive statistics and random forest predictive modeling were performed. Respondents were categorized as “frequent responder” (FR, >75% completion) or “less-frequent responder” (LFR, <75% completion). In total, 1,354 responses were collected (72% response rate) and 1,269 responses were included in the final analysis after data cleaning. 51.22% (650/1,269) of respondents self-reported completing a dermatology-focused survey in the past year. For those who did not take a survey in the past year, features of a survey that would increase the likelihood of completion included the evaluation of a clinically relevant topic (144/619, 23.26%), incentive amount of $20 (249/619, 40.23%), and 6-10 questions maximum (249/619, 40.23%). Factors predictive of whether a respondent was a FR versus a LFR were timing of solicitation and the respondent's primary motivation (accuracy=0.7538, F-1 score=0.8919), showing that LFRs preferred early morning dissemination and a minimum incentive of $20. Demographic factors and features related to research involvement inaccurately predicted survey responsiveness (accuracy=0.5956, F-1 score=0.6015; accuracy=0.6632, F-1 score=0.6452). Surveys are important tools for dermatology research and improving responsiveness increases the value of results. Early morning solicitation and financial incentivization of a minimum of $20 were the most predictive factors for promoting survey responsiveness amongst LFRs; thus, survey studies should incorporate these features to improve response rates.
