<p>Compared to shear thickening fluid (STF), shear thickening gel (STG) offers excellent shear thickening performance without issues such as particle settling, making them widely applied in human body safety protection. This study selected fumed silica (SiO<sub>2</sub>) as the reinforcing material. STS (STG/SiO<sub>2</sub>) was prepared by mechanical mixing and combined with Kevlar fabric to prepare STS/Kevlar composites. The optimal SiO<sub>2</sub> content was discussed through dynamic rheological tests and compression tests at different strain rates, with further discussion of the SiO<sub>2</sub> reinforcement mechanism. The protective performance of the STS/Kevlar composites was evaluated by quasi-static puncture and Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB). The results demonstrated that the presence of STS increased energy dissipation of fabrics, and the STS/Kevlar composites showed good impact resistance.</p> Graphical abstract <p></p>
