Nano-Al2O3 obtained the best tribological properties than similar hardness nanoparticles filled into epoxy resin

To meet the challenges associated with friction and wear in mechanical moving components, the tribological performance of a class of nanoparticles (Si3N4, ZrO2, SiC, and Al2O3) filled into epoxy resin was investigated in this study. Compared with the pure epoxy resin, the mechanical strength and tribological properties of the prepared composites significantly improved. More encouragingly, the resulting epoxy resin composites filled by Al2O3 demonstrated outstanding lubricating properties; the improvement in tribological performance under boundary lubrication is attributed to a robust friction film containing nanocrystalline iron oxide and abundant Al2O3 nanoparticles. Moreover, the tribological behaviors of four types of nanoparticles were primarily dependent on the tribo-film. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the application of polymer composites for a wide range under harsh lubrication condition.
