Climatological characteristics on the links between moisture transport and extreme precipitation events in China
摘要
Moisture transport is a crucial driving factor of extreme precipitation events (EPEs). This paper develops a two-layer complex network to exploit climatological characteristics on the links between moisture transport and EPEs in China. Specifically, focusing on the period from 1948 to 2021, the links from moisture transport to EPEs by month are tracked by event synchronization and characterized by network topology. The results show that there exist in total five communities of the links, showing different associations with the East Asian Monsoon. Specifically, in southern and eastern China, the links strengthen in March and peak in August; in the Loess Plateau of China, the links fluctuate during the alternation of prevailing winds; in northeastern China, the links peak in July with fluctuations in May and November; in the southern Tibetan Plateau, the links strengthen before the alternation of prevailing winds; and in northwestern China, the links weaken during the East Asian Summer Monsoon stage. In southern and eastern China, the links point to three pathways of moisture transport contributing to EPEs from the Indian Ocean, western Pacific and South Asia within 8 days. In the meantime, it is observed that tropical cyclones influence about 50% of the links during July and August and that atmospheric rivers account for 40% of the links in June, July and August. Overall, the climatological characteristics provide useful information on the dynamics of moisture transport and EPEs in China.
