The persistence of spring soil temperature anomalies in West Asia and the possible mechanism

West Asia is one of the key regions where land surface warming is significant over Eurasia. The spring soil temperature (ST) anomaly in West Asia can affect local and remote summer climate, and one of the key processes is the persistence of spring ST anomaly. However, the persistence of spring ST anomaly and the related physical processes are still unclear. Based on ERA-Interim, ERA5-Land and GLDAS-CLSM reanalysis data, the results of statistical analysis show that the spring ST anomaly can persist from 0 to more than 6 months in West Asia, where the persistence time of spring shallow ST anomaly is longer than in other parts of Western Eurasia. The persistence of shallow spring ST anomalies is closely related to the persistence of shallow soil moisture anomalies due to spring precipitation anomalies, where spring precipitation is higher than summer precipitation in West Asia. The persistence of spring ST anomalies affects land surface fluxes 2–7 months later in West Asia. In addition, in parts of West Asia, the signal of spring shallow ST anomalies reappears in August in shallow soils after disappearing, depending partly on the persistence of spring ST anomalies in middle and deep soils. This study will help deepen the understanding of the persistence of spring ST anomaly in West Asia, one of the regions with the most significant warming in Eurasia.
