Interdecadal variation in the relationship between ENSO and summer precipitation in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River

The interdecadal variation in the relationship between the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and summer precipitation in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River (SPMLYR) was analyzed, revealing two significant interdecadal shifts: one in the early 1990s and another in the late 2000s. These shifts were driven by changes in the interactions between SPMLYR and the western North Pacific anticyclone (WNPAC) and East Asian westerly jet (EAJ), as well as alterations in the ENSO-WNPAC and ENSO-EAJ relationships. Before the early 1990s, both the WNPAC and EAJ significantly influenced SPMLYR. A stronger WNPAC and a southward-shifted EAJ exhibited considerable synergy and similar responses to ENSO and ENSO-induced Indian Ocean sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs). From the early 1990s to the late 2000s, the weakening of EAJ interannual variability shifted the primary influence on SPMLYR to the WNPAC. Rapid El Niño decay and the development of Central Pacific La Niña enhanced WNPAC activity and its impact on SPMLYR. After the late 2000s, the synergy between a stronger WNPAC and a southward-shifted EAJ diminished, with contrasting SSTAs influences: La Niña drove stronger WNPAC activity, whereas persistent El Niño drove the EAJ southward. Given the significant impact of the WNPAC-EAJ interaction on SPMLYR, the ENSO-SPMLYR relationship has become increasingly complex during this period.
