<p>Virtual reality (VR) environments offer a novel medium for raising awareness and promoting pro-environmental behaviors such as energy conservation. This study investigates the effectiveness of three intervention methods—periodic audio announcements, visually appealing two-dimensional posters, and social cues from non-player characters (NPCs)—in influencing energy conservation behaviors within a VR simulation of an indoor office environment. Sixty participants completed pre- and post-exposure assessments using a pro-environmental behavior (PEB) questionnaire, which evaluated cognitive, affective, and conative dimensions. Results indicate that all interventions positively impacted participants’ affective and cognitive understanding of energy conservation. Moreover, the visual intervention also resulted in statistically significant changes in PEB scores (<InlineEquation ID="IEq1"> <InlineMediaObject> <ImageObject Color="BlackWhite" FileRef="371_2025_4003_Article_IEq1.gif" Format="GIF" Height="16" Rendition="HTML" Resolution="72" Type="Linedraw" Width="77" /> </InlineMediaObject> <EquationSource Format="TEX">\(p=0.0297\)</EquationSource> <EquationSource Format="MATHML"><math> <mrow> <mi>p</mi> <mo>=</mo> <mn>0.0297</mn> </mrow> </math></EquationSource> </InlineEquation>), suggesting a shift toward more energy conscious actions. This effectiveness can be attributed to the VR environment’s ability to provide persistent visual priming and self-paced learning through strategically placed posters, enhancing message retention and behavioral intent. While audio announcements and NPC-led interventions effectively fostered awareness and emotional connection, their influence on goal-oriented behavior modification was insignificant. These findings underscore the promise of VR as a tool for promoting sustainable practices and highlight the potential of visual cues in driving pro-environmental behavior change.
