An overview of the urinary stone’s disease in north of Tunisia over the past decade

To assess the stone composition in Tunisian population in a more recent period.
MethodsThe data were collected from 2317 stones produced between January 2010 and December 2020. Stone analysis was based on a stereomicroscope imaging study and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Results were expressed as the main component of each stone according to sex and age of the patients and the urological procedures for the stone management.
ResultsOur study involved 2317 kidney stones. The sex-ratio was 2.2. The average age was 44.4 years ± 16.8 with no significant difference between genders. Children accounted for 7.3%. Stone event occurred most often between the ages 40–60 years. The most common location for stones was the kidney. Regarding the composition of stones, calcium oxalate (CaOx) was the main component of 73.7% of the stones, followed by uric acid (13.3%), calcium phosphate (5.7%), cystine (2.5%), struvite (1.9%) and ammonium urate (1.4%). CaOx was more prevalent in men, while uric acid and carbapatite were more frequent in women (p < 0.0001). The frequency peak for CaOx and carbonate apatite was observed between the ages of 40 to 60 years.
ConclusionStone composition was like that in literature. Although, by contrast with most reports, uric acid stones were more prevalent in women than in men. This observation is consistent with the increase in the obesity’s prevalence, which is more pronounced among Tunisian women. Thus, we have a better understanding of what type of stones forms and what are related factors in our population now.
