<p>Girdling technique in horticultural crops is used to manipulate vegetative growth and improves flowering, fruit set, productivity and quality of fruits. The present investigation was conducted to appraise the effect of girdling of 25 and 50 per cent primary branches (PB) with the removal of bark of 2&#xa0;mm, 4&#xa0;mm and 6&#xa0;mm thickness and ungirdled plants (Control) in ‘Calcuttia’ litchi cultivar showing erratic bearing behavior under sub-mountane zone of north India for two successive years (2021–2023). Results revealed that different girdling treatments significantly decreased physiological parameters viz. net photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, internal CO<sub>2</sub> concentration and chlorophyll pigments compared to ungirdled plants. Girdling treatments irrespective of removal of bark of different thickness enhanced the activity of leaf antioxidant activity-catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POX), total sugars, phenols and flavonoid content than the control. The biochemical alterations in girdled shoots were accompanied by an elevation of proline level being highest in the plants where bark of 6&#xa0;mm followed by 4&#xa0;mm width was removed in 50% PB over the other treatments. It is suggested that plants subjected to girdling of 50% PB with the removal of bark of 4&#xa0;mm width (T<sub>4</sub>) after the advent of II<sup>nd</sup> vegetative flush in October i.e. 5–6&#xa0;months before the anticipated flowering significantly enhances accumulation of carbohydrates above the girdled portion, induces consistent flowering and sustainable production of quality fruits due to higher leaf N content, induction of oxidative stress that activates antioxidant defense mechanisms and potential disruption of the plant photochemical apparatus.</p>
