Pre-Harvest Continuous Led Lighting Improves Nutritional Quality and Sugar Accumulation in Hydroponic Lettuce
摘要
Growers have always striven to produce high-quality lettuce to meet increasing customer expectations. One promising approach for enhancing plant yield and quality is continuous lighting (CL), which eliminates the dark period and extends photosynthesis. In this study, we investigated the effects of different durations of continuous LED lighting before harvest on the plant growth and quality of hydroponic lettuce. The results demonstrated that 24–48 h of continuous lighting before harvest significantly increased shoot dry matter and nutritional value of lettuce. Following a 48-hour continuous lighting treatment prior to harvest, the levels of carotenoids, vitamin C (Vc), soluble proteins and soluble sugars were all markedly enhanced, while the nitrate content was simultaneously reduced. Furthermore, continuous lighting promoted the accumulation of sucrose, glucose, and fructose by upregulating the expression of photosynthesis- and sugar-related genes in lettuce. In summary, utilizing short-term continuous LED lighting before harvest serves as an effective strategy to optimize the nutritional and flavor quality of hydroponic lettuce. Our study proposes a lighting strategy involving short-term continuous lighting before harvest to improve the quality of lettuce, providing theoretical and technical guidance for energy-efficient production in controlled environments.
