Assessment of Physio-biochemical Processes During Seed Filling in Lallemantia Species Under Drought Stress

In the Lamiaceae family, Lallemantia iberica (dragon’s head) and Lallemantia royleana (lady’s mantle) are recognized as important species with notable medicinal and industrial applications. Drought stress is a critical abiotic factor that shortens the seed filling stage and negatively affects physiological processes and seed vigor. In this research, we evaluated the response of Lallemantia species (L. iberica and L. royleana) to varying levels of drought stress (well-watered (80% field capacity), moderate stress (60% field capacity), and severe drought (40% field capacity) across harvest dates of 8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48, and 56 days after flowering (DAF). Our results indicated that seed weight peaked at 40 and 48 DAF under severe and moderate drought stress, respectively. Seed moisture content gradually decreased, while seed dry weight increased considerably as seed development progressed. Increased drought stress intensity shortened the seed filling duration, leading to diminished seed weight, smaller seed size, and lower abscisic acid (ABA) content in the offspring. L. iberica exhibited the highest germination, oil, fatty acids, and ABA, whereas L. royleana had further proline and soluble sugar. This study showed that drought stress in the maternal environment during seed filling has a significantly impact on the physio-biochemical processes of offspring. Furthermore, these physio-biochemical responses appear to be intricately linked to the formation of seed vigor and can serve as indicators of seed quality.
