<p>Apple (<i>Malus domestica</i>) is one of the most popular fruits consumed worldwide which is cherished for its flavor, nutritional value, and adaptability. However, apple industry is facing significant challendes due to post-harvest losses. Since 1999–2002, 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) has displayed progress in addressing the aforementioned problems and provided practical ways to improve apple quality and prolong its shelf life. The present review concentrates on several 1-MCP application techniques for different apple cultivar, emphasizing how they impact its effectiveness and providing information on 1-MCP affecting apple quality attributes such as firmness, acidity, sugars, flavor and other nutritional factors. The current review unveils the effect of pre- and post-harvest application of 1-MCP on physiological disorder, physicochemical changes, and sensory quality of apple during storage period. The efficacy of 1-MCP in apple fruit with variations in concentration, storage temperature, genotype, and maturity is also discussed in this paper. When combined with controlled atmospheric storage, 1-MCP use after harvest increased the shelf life of apple by preventing ethylene action, delaying ripening and senescence and lowering the incidence of postharvest disease. Furthermore, pre-harvest application of 1-MCP led to prevent fruit drop along with reducing incidence of soft scald in apple. 1-MCP binds irreversibly to receptors sights, blocking ethylene signaling and lead to an “evergreen effect” on 1-MCP treated fruit i.e., fruit remains firm and fail to ripen. However, to reboot ripening several methods/strategies were used that again stimulated ethylene biosynthesis.</p>
