Sources, seasonal variations, and factors influencing the distribution of PAHs in the surface sediments and water column of the central Bohai Sea, China

This study investigated seasonal variations in the concentrations of 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (Σ16 PAHs) in surface sediments of the central Bohai Sea during spring and summer 2022, to identify the underlying driving factors of seasonal changes. Principal component and multivariate linear regression analyses revealed that the PAHs were mainly originated from pyrolytic sources. Among 23 sampling stations, only one station had PHSs that could be derived from petroleum sources. The concentrations of dissolved PAHs in various water layers and seabottom surface sediments were measured, and the results show that the concentrations of Σ16 dissolved PAHs in most stations were higher in spring than in summer. A comprehensive analysis was conducted to explore the potential factors influencing the seasonal variation of PAH concentrations in the surface sediments, suggesting that the adsorption and absorption of PAHs in water by phytoplankton indirectly affect the concentration of PAHs in sediment, and that the phenomenon of high PAH concentrations in spring and low PAH concentrations in summer is related to the re-suspension by high tidal currents and occasional strong winds in summer.
