Background <p>Massage therapy is a&#xa0;safe intervention without side effects for reducing pain and increasing the range of motion (ROM). This study investigated the immediate effect of abdominal muscle massage on pain and ROM in low back pain (LBP) patients.</p> Methods <p>After meeting the entry criteria, 74&#xa0;patients with LBP were randomly assigned to the intervention and control groups. Pain intensity was assessed with a&#xa0;visual analog scale (VAS), and two analog inclinometers were used to measure the lumbar ROM. A&#xa0;session of lumbar muscle massage was administered to the control group, and a&#xa0;session of abdominal muscle massage was administered to the intervention group. Before and after the massage, pain and ROM were assessed in both groups. SPSS&#xa0;25 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA) was used for data analysis, and the significance level of the tests was 5%.</p> Results <p>Similar to low back muscle massage, abdominal muscle massage significantly increased the range of motion and decreased pain intensity (both <i>P</i> &lt; 0.001) during forward, backward, and side bending.</p> Conclusion <p>The current study’s findings indicate that abdominal massage can immediately reduce LBP pain and increase ROM. Furthermore, the improvement following abdominal massage was the same as following lower back massage. These findings strongly support the integration of abdominal massage into LBP treatment programs, highlighting its potential as an effective approach for reducing pain and improving ROM. Further investigation is warranted.</p>

Background

Massage therapy is a safe intervention without side effects for reducing pain and increasing the range of motion (ROM). This study investigated the immediate effect of abdominal muscle massage on pain and ROM in low back pain (LBP) patients.

Methods

After meeting the entry criteria, 74 patients with LBP were randomly assigned to the intervention and control groups.
