摘要

Background

Functional neurological disorders (FND) are a new field of medicine. At the same time, this term is equated with conversion disorder (CD). Can FND be equated with the group of conversion disorders?

Materials and methods

The disorders described in the FND publications to date are placed alongside the publications on manual medicine. From the perspective of the definition of FND as conversion disorders, the functional pain syndromes of complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) and fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) are compared with the criteria of the descriptions of conversion disorders originating from psychiatry and psychotherapy.

Results

This comparison shows that these two disorders can also be accompanied by conversion disorders (as well as all other mental disorders). However, they are not themselves conversion disorders.

Conclusion

The disorders of FND can be labelled as somatic conversion disorders. However, the disorders discussed here—although functional disorders—do not belong to the group of FNDs, as they are not conversion disorders.
