Spatial variability of ice krill, Euphausia crystallorophias, diet from the Amundsen Sea to Ross Sea (Antarctica) revealed by stomach content and stable isotope analyses

Euphausia crystallorophias (ice krill) is dominant in Antarctic continental shelf ecosystems, especially the Ross Sea (RS), Amundsen Sea (AS), and Ross–Amundsen Sea (RAS). Its feeding ecology remains unclear. This study used stomach content and stable isotope (δ13C, δ15N) analyses to explore its food sources and ecological niche variability across these regions. Stomach content analysis identified 31 prey taxa, with diatoms (mainly Fragilariopsis spp.) accounting for > 90% of semi-quantitative scores; 5 heterotroph taxa (e.g., ciliates.spp, copepod larvae) confirmed its omnivorous traits. Stable isotope results showed significant regional differences: δ13C of RS krill (− 25.20 ± 2.77‰) was notably higher than AS (− 28.25 ± 0.91‰) and RAS (− 27.40 ± 0.90‰), reflecting more diverse food sources in RS; δ15N differed significantly too, with AS (6.11 ± 0.45‰) > RAS (5.52 ± 1.36‰) > RS (5.06 ± 0.69‰).
