Hepatopancreas in the starving amphipod Ampelisca eschrichtii and the feeding amphipod Monoporeia affinis during vitellogenesis

This study examined the functional morphology of the hepatopancreas—an organ essential for providing nutrients for vitellogenic growth of oocyte in two amphipod species Ampelisca eschrichtii and Monoporeia affinis, collected from the north-eastern shelf of the Sakhalin Island (Okhotsk Sea) during the summers and autumns of 2013–2021. Due to differing habitat conditions, A. eschrichtii experiences seasonal food scarcity in summer and autumn, whereas M. affinis maintains access to food throughout these seasons. Histological analysis revealed that the epithelium of diverticula in the hepatopancreas of both species consists of R-, B-, F- and E-cells. In M. affinis, diverticula exhibited extensive areas of normal (intact) epithelium and extensive zones of epithelial atrophy and sloughing (excluding the distal region with E-cells) in both seasons. In contrast, A. eschrichtii showed signs of widespread epithelial atrophy during summer, with only limited areas of normal epithelium in some individuals. The noted histopathological features included reduced epithelial height, swollen F-cell nuclei, chromatin condensation in R- and F-cell nuclei, eosinophilic chromatin staining and destruction of hypertrophied B-cells. By autumn, most A. eschrichtii exhibited severe epithelial atrophy in the diverticula, again sparing the distal zone with E-cells. These findings highlight species-specific differences in hepatopancreatic function related to seasonal food availability during vitellogenesis.
