A review on Antarctic polyextremophiles and their survival strategies

Polyextremophiles are organisms capable of withstanding multiple extreme environmental conditions. Antarctic polyextremophiles are uniquely suited to survive in severe cold, high salinity, desiccation, intense UV radiation, and high pressure. Through a systematic review of research articles, we highlight survival strategies, demonstrated by various taxa, including bacteria, fungi, archaea, plants, and microinvertebrates. Notably, organisms such as the bacteria genus Halomonas or fungi like Cryomyces antarcticus showcase adaptations that allow persistence in Antarctic environments with multiple extreme environmental pressures. These adaptations reveal the biochemical and physiological capacities that sustain life in some of Earth's most hostile environments. This synthesis underscores the Antarctic region's role as a natural laboratory for understanding the resilience and adaptability of life, contributing essential knowledge to environmental biology and the study of extremophiles.
