Synthesis of biocidal emulsion polymer for coating applications
摘要
To prevent both aesthetic and physical degradation of the painted surface due to exposure to wide variety of air borne spores from yeast, fungi, and algae, in tropical countries such as India, manufacturers have started increasing biocide loading in paint formulation. However, because of weathering, rainfall, humidity, moisture, performance of these additives over time could be significantly low due to loss by migration/leach out /emission from dry film. Biocide regulatory act often poses a concern on the use of available active agent concentration in a coating. However, lowering dosage will offset the anti-algal warranties. Hence, one of the possible routes to arrest the said issues could be the use of well-dispersed Biocide in paint films, which will offer the possibility of slow leaching of active agents that in turn enhance the product performance while maintaining the biocide directive. In this study, we focus on preparation of anti-algal coatings by incorporating an anti-algal agent through water-based binder. This manuscript elucidates different approaches, such as, Emulsion polymerization using paste of anti-algal agent, dispersion & emulsion polymerization utilizing solution of anti-algal agent for well dispersion of anti-algal agent. Further, water-based binder containing anti-algal agent was utilized in exterior paint system and its paint performance was evaluated.
