Incapacitating the challenges of dye removal using polysulfone composite membrane with improved permeability and antifouling study
摘要
The polysulfone (Psf) membranes are widely used in membrane separation processes due to their excellent mechanical strength, thermal stability and chemical resistance. Nevertheless, they are susceptible for membrane fouling and subsequently presents decreased efficiency. To address this issue, Psf membranes are often modified. The study aims to prepare a novel SBAL/Psf composite membrane by incorporating SBAL complex (Ag capped on BSA) into the Psf matrix which enhances the membrane separation process and reduces the membrane fouling. The prepared complex and the membranes were characterized using FT-IR, TGA, FESEM, CA and zeta potential. Later, assessed for its permeability at various pressures, water uptake and porosity. The thermal stability (up to 450 °C) porosity (76.72%) hydrophilicity (56.87°) and water uptake (73.24%) were improved compared with respect to bare Psf membrane by the addition of the SBAL complex. Also, the membranes were evaluated for the effective removal of EBT and MB dyes at different pressures. Lastly, by exposing the produced membranes to a feed solution that contains a foulant mixture, the study emphasizes the antifouling qualities. The Psf membrane with the highest concentration of SBAL complex showed low irreversible fouling and total fouling, thus indicating its remarkable antifouling capability.
