<p>A novel bacterial isolate designated as strain 1C24<sup>T</sup> was isolated from a coastal breakwater stone. Its cells were Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, non-motile and rod-shaped. The major cellular fatty acids were summed feature 8 (C<sub>18:1</sub> <i>ω</i>6<i>c</i> and/or C<sub>18:1</sub> <i>ω</i>7<i>c</i>), iso-C<sub>18:0</sub> and C<sub>18:1</sub> <i>ω</i>7<i>c</i> 11-methyl; the main polar lipids included diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and sphingoglycolipid; the respiratory quinone was Q-10. The 16S rRNA gene-based analysis demonstrated that strain 1C24<sup>T</sup> belonged to the family <i>Erythrobacteraceae</i>. The phylogenomic inference revealed that strain 1C24<sup>T</sup> belonged to the genus <i>Parerythrobacter</i> and formed a separate branch independent from its relatives. The digital DNA-DNA hybridization, average nucleotide identity and amino acid identity values between strain 1C24<sup>T</sup> and its relatives of the genus <i>Parerythrobacter</i> further indicated that strain 1C24<sup>T</sup> should represent a putative novel species of this genus. The genomic size and DNA G + C content of strain 1C24<sup>T</sup> were 2.88 Mbp and 64.85%. The genome analysis demonstrated that strain 1C24<sup>T</sup> contained a complete photosynthesis gene cluster and a carotenoid biosynthesis gene cluster, and the latter was confirmed by carotenoid detection. Based on genotypic and phenotypic characteristics, strain 1C24<sup>T</sup> is concluded to represent a novel species of the genus <i>Parerythrobacter</i> within the family <i>Erythrobacteraceae</i>, for which the name <i>Parerythrobacter aurantius</i> sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 1C24<sup>T</sup> (= GDMCC 1.2450<sup>T</sup> = KCTC 82667<sup>T</sup>).</p>
