<p>This overview provides an updated summary of clinically relevant findings in attachment research. Building on previous reviews and an outline of the core assumptions of attachment theory, the article first presents data on the distribution of attachment patterns in children and adults, theoretical and empirical contributions to the neurobiology of attachment and research findings addressing the role of attachment characteristics as risk or protective factors in the context of mental and somatic diseases. The latter are also examined in the light of studies conducted in primary care settings. In this context, attachment theory offers a&#xa0;valuable framework for understanding individual differences in coping with illness, patterns of proximity and distancing behavior and stress processing.</p>
