Background <p>Supervision of oncologists is an important liaison activity in psycho-oncology. Nevertheless, this task is rarely thought about and often neglected in the training of psycho-oncologists. Scientific studies on supervision are very scarce compared to the body of psycho-oncological research.</p> Material and methods <p>Since a&#xa0;few years, we discuss our experiences by means of audio-taped supervision, have initiated a&#xa0;research field “supervision in oncology” and plan to develop a&#xa0;training program for future supervisors. These activities have led us to face various clinical, scientific and training issues, which are discussed in this article. Some past and ongoing research projects on supervision in the oncological setting are presented and discussed: the impact of supervision on the emotional reactions of supervisees towards the presented patient&#xa0;(i), topics brought into supervision and worked through&#xa0;(ii) and the evaluation of a&#xa0;structured, clinician-centered supervision&#xa0;(iii). We also briefly present our training program, which is expected to start next year.</p> Results <p>Our studies showed that supervision can positively influence the emotions supervisees experience towards the presented patients. It can thus be assumed that supervision can alleviate clinicians’ emotions. Topics treated in supervision can be classified into four distinct categorizes: situations in which clinicians cannot understand the patients behavior, in those which they understand the behavior but are unable to change it, in those which they reflect on their own experiences and in those which institutional determinants hinder their work. The evaluation of a&#xa0;structured supervision focused on countertransference and its origins, showed that clinicians have an important openness and motivation to reflect on their experience and to link it with their biography.</p> Conclusion <p>To conduct research on supervision in oncology is challenging, time-consuming and can only partly be based on existing methodological approaches. The scientific challenges of supervision stimulated us to deepen our reflections on supervision in the oncology setting.</p>

Background
