摘要

Nonsuicidal self-injurious behavior (NSSI) is a widespread phenomenon among adolescents and represents a relevant risk factor for the development and maintenance of suicidal behavior (SB). This review article highlights the similarities and differences between NSSI and SB. An integrative model is presented which explains the relationships between both phenomena based on three central theories: the gateway theory, the third variable theory and the capability for suicide relating to the interpersonal theory of suicidal behavior. These theories offer potential explanations for the relationships between NSSI and SB, emphasizing a continuum between the two constructs. Empirical studies are presented which support the main assumptions of the model while simultaneously pointing to knowledge gaps, for example, with respect to its validity during adolescence. Finally, the findings of the integrated model are transferred to the clinical practice.
