Weiterbildung in Psychedelika-assistierter Therapie – Erfahrungen aus der Schweiz

First study results show a potential for psychedelic drugs and 3,4‑Methylenedioxy-N-methylamphetamine (MDMA) in the treatment of affective disorders. It is argued that the training of therapists is crucial for the safe and effective use of these substances in psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT). Different contexts, such as the study setting or the psychotherapeutic practice, require different qualifications of practitioners. For example, the responsibilities of sitters and therapists need to be differentiated, which has implications for the respective training programs. This diversity is also reflected in existing international programs. The current treatment practice in Switzerland is based on exemptions granted by the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health (BAG) for the limited medical use of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), MDMA and psilocybin for the treatment of patients. Against this background, the psychotherapeutic framework of PAT is outlined and the corresponding need for specialized education is emphasized. The Swiss Medical Society for Psycholytic Therapy (SÄPT) has offered such PAT training courses since 2018. The article provides an overview of the continuing education structure, theoretical and practical contents, and other aspects. Furthermore, the possible relevance of personal psychedelic experience for therapists is addressed. In view of the increasing demand and the currently limited options, the implementation of further high-quality widely accessible training programs is of central importance. For quality assurance further structures and especially collegial networking play a crucial role.
