<p>Historically, characterizing animal personality has primarily occurred in the laboratory as a way to control for the myriads of potential confounding variables associated with studies conducted in field settings. However, whether personality traits tested under laboratory conditions reflect similar personality traits to those of the same individuals tested under field conditions is understudied. Currently, there are very few studies directly comparing field and laboratory personality, potentially due to the challenges associated with conducting behavior assays in both conditions on the same individuals. Ornate Box Turtles (<i>Terrapene ornata</i>) offer a unique opportunity for field and laboratory study due to the relative ease at which they can be found (via radio telemetry), handled, and relocated to testing sites. In this study, we directly compared behavior performance between field and laboratory personality assays for 37 individuals to determine whether behavior was repeatable and consistent within and across testing conditions. We completed a total of 148 trials across field and laboratory conditions for boldness and activity and found repeatability in both conditions, response correlations (i.e. behavioral syndromes) within each condition, but no significant consistency in behavior between testing conditions. These results show the context-dependent nature of the expression of personality traits and that measuring personality across different contexts may provide a more holistic view of the animal’s ecology.</p>
