<p>In previous studies of personality in wild rodents, personalities of the experimental animals were usually measured using the methods that are originally designed for laboratory mice (e.g., <i>Mus musculus</i>). Yet the applicability and consistency of these methods applied to wild rodents have not been fully evaluated. Further, different personalities of individuals were often repeatedly measured using different methods, resulting in experimental errors due to the over-handling to animals, and the interferences between trials. Here, we tested personalities of laboratory mice (<i>Mus musculus</i>) and Chinese white-bellied rats (<i>Niviventer confucianus</i>) using the common tests that are originally designed for laboratory mice to evaluate whether these tests are effective in testing wild rats, whereby a test is available when the results are repeatable in the wild rats. Besides, we analyzed the inter-relevance between different personalities of the experimental animals to hope to reduce repeated measurements in the future studies. The results showed that behavioral variables in the five tests (i.e., open-field test, emergence test, novel object test, handling bag test, barrier test) were highly repeatable in both the laboratory mice and the wild rats, suggesting that these tests are effective in measuring personalities of wild rats. We found a behavioral syndrome in wild rats (activity, boldness, and exploration were correlated positively). These results suggest that some tests that originally designed for laboratory mice are applicable to wild rats, but the others (e.g., hole-board test, and mirror-image stimulation) should be evaluated carefully. In the future, repeating measurements of personalities of rats may be not necessary in descriptive studies because one personality can be predicted by the others according to their relevance.</p>
