Background <p>Although many types of pig flap models exist, little attention has been given to the lower abdominal wall of pigs. This study explored the anatomy of the superficial inferior epigastric vessels in pigs and the feasibility of using pigs as an animal model of the superficial inferior epigastric artery (SIEA) flap.&#xa0;</p> Methods <p>Fifteen fresh cadaveric samples of four-week-old hybrid pigs were used in this study. The vessels were slowly infused with black and red lard. The course, branches, and origin of the SIEA and the venous system were observed. Flap planning and dissection were conducted on 5 samples.&#xa0;</p> Results <p>The SIEA was present in all 15 specimens, sharing a common trunk with the deep inferior epigastric artery. The SIEA has a relatively long course and large diameter and can be divided into three segments. The venous system included the venae comitantes of the SIEA and the venae subcutaneae abdominis, the shafts of which gave off many branches running close to the ascending branches of the SIEA. The pedicle of the flap can be easily located via the inguinal lymph node, and the flap can be harvested at a convenient position.&#xa0;</p> Conclusions <p>The SIEA flap in pigs has a constant vascular anatomy and pigs can serve as an animal model of flap training.</p> <p>Level of evidence: Not ratable.</p>

The superficial inferior epigastric artery flap in pigs shows great feasibility for surgical training

摘要

Background

Although many types of pig flap models exist, little attention has been given to the lower abdominal wall of pigs. This study explored the anatomy of the superficial inferior epigastric vessels in pigs and the feasibility of using pigs as an animal model of the superficial inferior epigastric artery (SIEA) flap.
