Background <p>Patients with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) present with macroglossia requiring corrective glossectomy. While multiple surgical techniques are available, the primary objective should be to choose the method that best preserves nerve function. The aim of this article is to determine the neurosensory function of the tongue following partial glossectomy using the modified Egyedi-Obwegeser technique in patients with BWS compared to control subjects.</p> Methods <p>A longitudinal, multicenter experimental study was conducted on two patients with BWS who underwent partial glossectomy with the modified Egyedi-Obwegeser technique. At 5 years of age, the patients underwent sensory tests (for pain, heat, touch, and cold) and sensorial tests on the tongue, which were also carried out to two children under 5 years without any medical or surgical history involving the tongue. <sup>1</sup></p> Results <p>The sensory evaluation revealed that both BWS patients had abolished touch and pain sensation only at the tip of the tongue. One patient also exhibited reduced heat and cold sensation with an incongruent asymmetric pattern. The sensory evaluation showed intact perception of sour and bitter tastes in both the BWS cases and the controls, while the surgery patients lacked perception of salty and sweet tastes in certain areas, displaying an incongruent asymmetric pattern.</p> Conclusions <p>Partial glossectomy using the modified Egyedi-Obwegeser technique had minimal impact on the neurosensory functions of the tongue.</p> <p>Level of evidence: Level V, risk / prognostic study.</p>
