The role of three-dimensional (3D) printing in plastic and reconstructive surgery: innovations and applications

Three-dimensional printing (3DP) has transformed plastic and reconstructive surgery by providing unmatched precision, customization, and efficiency. This review highlights the significant advancements and applications of 3DP in medical fields such as cranio-maxillofacial surgery, orthopedics, and prosthetics. The technology’s ability to create patient-specific implants and detailed anatomical models has improved surgical planning, intraoperative guidance, and postoperative outcomes. Innovations in biocompatible and biodegradable materials have further expanded 3DP’s potential, offering promising alternatives for regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. However, challenges remain in establishing standardized guidelines, securing regulatory approval, and managing costs. Ethical considerations, including informed consent, potential conflicts of interest, and equitable access, are critical as technology continues to evolve. The concept of 4-dimensional (4D) modeling, which incorporates the element of time into 3DP, represents a future direction for dynamic visualization of anatomical structures, potentially enhancing surgical planning and patient outcomes. Ongoing research and critical evaluation are essential to maximize the benefits of 3DP technology in improving patient care. This review underscores the transformative impact of 3DP in plastic surgery and the need for continued innovation and ethical oversight.Level of Evidence: Not ratable
