Peltospira smaragdina gastropod assemblages as pioneers in Atlantic hydrothermal vent community succession

Along the slow-spreading northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge (nMAR), significant geological events are rare and long-term stability is observed in faunal assemblages colonising hydrothermal vents. Temporal variation studies have shown the persistence and constancy of climax communities (mussels or shrimps) and the absence of species turnover as described in traditional ecological succession models. However, there is no knowledge of what a new nascent hydrothermal vent would look like or which taxa would be the first colonisers. Here, we present our findings of a gastropod-based assemblage over time and address its role in the ecosystem. For this purpose, imagery going back to 1994 was revisited, re-analysed and compared to recent data collections. Peltospira smaragdina gastropods tend to colonise recently precipitated substrata, bathed in fluid flow and rich in associated microorganisms and, over time, are replaced by the better known mussel and shrimp assemblages. Based on spatio-temporal observations, we propose P. smaragdina gastropods as indicators of early succession, recent (re)activation and newly formed substrata. This also characterises them as probable pioneers in the nMAR succession models.
