Coral disease prevalence in the Banco Chinchorro biosphere reserve (Mexico) after hurricane dean event

In recent decades, hermatypic coral cover has declined drastically worldwide. Coral diseases are one of the main causes of current reef degradation, especially in the Caribbean. These diseases have emerged regionally due to anthropogenic stressors (e.g., nutrient inputs and coastal pollution) and can be potentiated by natural factors (e.g., storms and hurricanes). However, the modes of dispersal and disease progression in reef ecosystems are still poorly understood, particularly at sites with low anthropogenic stress that have not been studied in depth. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the spatio-temporal variation of coral disease prevalence as a function of the impact of Hurricane Dean in three different areas (La Baliza, La Caldera, and Chancay) of the Banco Chinchorro Biosphere Reserve. Four sampling periods were sampled: April 2007, October 2007, April 2009, and December 2009. The results showed that the dominance of disease prevalence changed in some coral taxa after the impact of Hurricane Dean (October 2007); the most prevalent disease was White Plague Disease (WP), which occurred in Agaricia lamarcki. Two years later (April 2009 and December 2009), the most dominant disease was Dark Spot Disease (DSD) in Siderastrea spp. and Stephanocoenia intersepta, and WP and Yellow Band Disease (YBD) in Orbicella annularis. The benthic elements most related to disease prevalence were algae, dead coral, and topographic complexity. These results suggest that acute disturbances like hurricanes can change the coral’s physiological resources for post-event repair, increasing the incidence of emerging diseases in coral reefs.
